A Recap of GGD PHL #2 (Summer 2011, Hosted by Bluecadet)

Bluecadet hosts second Dinner; many new faces

Stormy weather be damned: over 30 geeky ladies didn’t let a little rain ruin their evening, making their way to Northern Liberties on August 25 for Girl Geek Dinner Philadelphia’s second event, hosted by Bluecadet.

Tristin Hightower, co-organizer for Girl Geek Dinners Philadelphia, welcomed the group and noted that about 1/3 of attendees were new faces! She covered some of the exciting things the group has done and pointed out the growing support for “lady geeks” with other programs in the area just for them: Web Start Women, PyStar Philly, Girl Develop It Philly, and TechGirlz.

Claire Ronsairo, a senior consultant with Blue Heron Consulting, Inc., presented on the world of Information Technology and life as a consultant. Discussing the entirety of a project timeline, Claire points out that not all IT positions require you to write code and that actual code writing is only a portion of what it takes to get a project out the door. Q&A after the presentation was very engaging, with ladies discussing a variety of topics, including how to prevent projects from going off track. Attendees ate dinner and mingled until about 9 pm. The friendly, casual atmosphere of Bluecadet was the perfect place for the ladies to sit back, relax, and meet new people. Pictures from the event can be found on Flickr and Facebook.

Up next for Girl Geek Dinners Philadelphia will be a September social event welcoming to all. To stay connected with upcoming events or activities, follow GGD PHL on Twitter, like them on Facebook or join the GGD PHL announcement mailing list.

Roadmap to IT Industry: Thinking of Going Into IT? It’s Not All About Writing Codes
For most folks, Information Technology means programming codes or fixing a computer. While that may be true, what they don’t realize is that these are just regions of the IT world. Anything that provides data or information in various multimedia forms and its management falls under the umbrella of IT. This talk will cover the latter. The focus will be on Information Systems for business or organization, the different phases of development of automating a business process and what roles are needed for each phase.

Claire Ronsairo, Senior IT Consultant | Blue Heron Consulting, Inc.
Claire Ronsairo helps organizations implement and maintain business enterprise Oracle applications. She evaluates their processes and designs algorithms that would address their business needs and enable them to take advantage of the functionality and configurability of the Oracle applications. The nature of her job is project based, which sometimes require her to travel to where the client is. Traveling could be tough but since the job calls for close partnership with the client, she has also forged friendships in different parts of the US.

Location
Bluecadet is located at 1011 N. Hancock in Philadephia, PA and is easily accessible via I-95. There should be plenty of parking on side streets.

Alternatively, Bluecadet‘s offices are about a 5-10 minute walk from the Girard Station stop on the MFL.

Dinner
Our gracious host, Bluecadet, will be providing food for us during the evening.

Big Thanks
A big thank you goes out to Bluecadet for hosting and feeding us during the event.

Last, but not least….
Please remember that dinners are currently for women only and you must RSVP.

Can you bring a friend? Yes! Just have her RSVP so she’s on the list.

If you have any questions or ideas, please reach out to us at info[at]ggdphl[dot]com. We look forward to meeting you!

We encourage tech and geeky ladies come on out to the Dinner to network, mingle and support the Philadelphia Girl Geek Dinners Chapter, even if the particular topic presented is of no interest.
